Civil Service’s music has always thrived on the edge of the cinematic, but their latest single, “Black Giraffes” out today, pushes that sensibility into a haunting, urgent new realm. The track serves as the lead preview of the band’s forthcoming album, DARK ///, due for release on 21st November via A Cheery Wave and Ripcord Records.
Written in the shadow of global crisis, “Black Giraffes” finds its voice at the intersection of despair and defiance. The band first played an early version of the song in 2022 at a Ukrainian benefit gig in Leeds, its skeletal form carried by grief but emboldened by solidarity. In its completed studio incarnation, the song has matured into something far heavier and more resonant. “Black Giraffes was a song born from finding the hope in the apocalyptic” Civil Service explain.
That hope is not abstract. The finished version incorporates direct quotes from Ukrainian aid workers and civilians in the country’s east, bearing testimony to resilience amid devastation. Each voice insists on pride and resistance in the face of an invasion that continues to redraw the global map. Against this backdrop, Civil Service shape a sound that feels both massive and intimate, an anthem grounded in lived experience rather than empty gesture.
Musically, “Black Giraffes” layers their taut post-rock atmospherics with a new dimension: the Severn Duo’s violin parts, which weave through the song like fissures of light cutting across an ashen sky. The strings don’t soften the song so much as heighten its intensity, carrying with them the gravity of loss and the flicker of survival. The result is a piece that feels epic without losing its human core, rooted in testimony as much as in texture.
Civil Service’s visit to Kyiv in 2019 lingers in the song’s DNA, lending it a sense of continuity and personal stake. But “Black Giraffes” isn’t nostalgia, it’s confrontation, a refusal to let catastrophe have the final word. As the first glimpse of DARK ///, it suggests the album will be their most ambitious and politically resonant work yet.
“Black Giraffes” is available now. DARK /// arrives November 21.
