Listen to Mogwai’s new single ‘Fanzine Made Of Flesh’

Mogwai have dropped “Fanzine Made of Flesh” the latest single from their forthcoming 11th studio album, The Bad Fire. The Glasgow band’s new LP is slated for release on the 24th January via Rock Action Records.

Written during an extended stay at Alex Kapranos’ (Franz Ferdinand) Brooklyn home in the fall of 2023, “Fanzine Made of Flesh” blends Mogwai’s signature post-rock sound with unexpected influences. Frontman Stuart Braithwaite offered insight into the track, saying, “In my head, it sounds like a cross between ABBA, Swervedriver, and Kraftwerk—though that might be ludicrous. Originally, it had a straightforward vocal, but on the final day of recording, we decided to use a vocoder. It’s pretty different, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.”

The song’s surging, distorted guitar progression intertwines with arpeggiated synths and bright keyboard arrangements, underscoring Braithwaite’s vocoded vocals. The result is a forward-thinking piece that continues Mogwai’s legacy of reinvention.

Accompanying the single is a video directed by Agnes Haus, described as “a pseudo-film trailer with a jumbled plot you can never fully grasp.” Haus explained her approach: “When I first heard the track, I embraced not understanding the words or the title’s origin. I wanted the video to feel like fragments that the viewer has to piece together themselves.” She added, “I envisioned it as the teaser for a full-length film—a mix of vague horror, emotional entanglement, and nods to ‘90s experimental art cinema. It’s also autobiographical, touching on growing up non-binary but not realizing it at the time. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn it into a feature someday.”
