Mums have been knocking around for a long time now in the UK’s burgeoning underground music scene. Jack and Roanne Evans first crossed paths in high school, bonding over a shared love of abrasive, full-throttle bands from both the alternative tradition and the far harsher fringes of heavy music. Before long, they joined forces with a local friend and launched the earliest version of their project, Aeroplane Flies High.
A few years passed by along with a marriage and a noticeable sharpening of their musical instincts before the couple brought in a new drummer and re-emerged as Mums. The shift wasn’t subtle: the riffs grew more distinct and memorably skewed, the melodies burrowed deep into the brain, and the volume levels pushed well beyond what most sensible humans would consider safe.
Touring across the UK and Europe, Mums built a reputation for shows that left ears ringing for days and converted crowds of thrill-seekers into devoted followers. Then came a halt. The departure of drummer Lewis left Jack and Roanne at a crossroads: recruit again, or let the band slip quietly into the ether? Months went by without a whisper, and fans waited, hoping for any sign of life.
The spark arrived in the form of Jonny Dickin, the pair’s closest friend, who stepped behind the kit and helped resurrect the group’s creative pulse. The result was Legs, their long-awaited follow-up, arriving nearly a decade after their debut and sounding every bit like a band reclaiming its purpose.
Well now they’re back at it with an end of year treat for us all on this fine Bandcamp Friday with the release of their double single “At All Times” and “Bellow Out.” True to form, both tracks are loud, punishing, fuzzy eruptions which fans of the grunge and noiserock scenes will love. They tracks were engineered at Suff Studio in Lancashire by Matt Heap and are available on all streaming platforms now.
