NevBorn – Alkaios · Part II · The Peacock (Review)

Swiss progressive metal outfit NevBorn return with Alkaios · Part II · The Peacock, the second chapter in their epic trilogy inspired by the Twelve Labors of Heracles. Set for release on 30th March 2025, this album is another sprawling, intricate masterpiece that builds on their already impressive legacy. With four expansive tracks, NevBorn continues to demonstrate their knack for complex, narrative-driven compositions, and their ability to seamlessly blend emotive soundscapes with progressive metal intensity.

Opening track “Elis” unfolds with a haunting atmosphere—crashing waves, delicate synths, and an eerie presence that gradually swells before exploding into pounding drums and soaring clean vocals. Over its 14-minute runtime, the song grows in layers, shifting from melodic beauty to an aggressive and dense energy, all the while maintaining an intricate balance between light and dark. The guitar work here is sublime, with so many finely executed ideas that each listen reveals something new. The breakdown at around the 11:25 mark is a highlight—an absolute bombshell of aggression and raw power that exemplifies NevBorn’s ability to surprise and captivate.

The second track, “Stymfalia” begins with electronic glitches and haunting bass synths, evolving into a Circa Survive-esque journey full of wailing vocals and piercing guitar solos. While the guitar work is undeniably impressive, the solos takes on a slightly tongue-in-cheek quality, but all is quickly forgive. especially as it builds towards its chaotic, relentless groove. There’s a sense of discomfort, with the band almost daring you to stay in the loop, before they finally release you into a fiery conclusion. It’s a track that plays with tension and releases it in thrilling bursts, making for a strange but compelling experience.

As you progress through the album, it’s clear that NevBorn aren’t interested in brevity. Each track hovers around the 15-minute mark, with plenty of time for reflection and exploration. “Knossos” for instance, begins in post-metal territory before veering into almost Tool-esque rhythms, with the drums driving an ever-building sense of urgency. The guitars remain in constant harmony, showcasing some truly exceptional musicianship. While there are moments where some sections feel a bit drawn out or repetitive, it’s all by design—the band wants you to get caught in their web, and when they throw wild curveballs, it’s like an instant jolt back into the experience.

What makes Alkaios · Part II · The Peacock particularly striking is its unpredictability. One moment, you’ll find yourself drifting through an unexpected jazz passage, the next you’re pummeled by crushing riffs and chaotic rhythms. These moments of calm amidst the storm are what make the album feel so emotionally impactful. The juxtaposition of soaring highs and crushing lows creates a dynamic range that’s both intense and cathartic.

“Tirida” begins with a slow, reflective mood before exploding into frantic guitar and drums, dragging you along in a frenzy. But just when you think you’re being overwhelmed, the track pulls back, giving you a brief respite before shaking things up all over again. It’s a fitting end to an album that’s as much about pushing the boundaries of progressive metal as it is about exploring deep emotional territory.
