In the heart of Nottingham, the walls of JT Soar resonated with an electrifying blend of emotional depth and musical grandeur recently as Overhead, The Albatross delivered an unforgettable performance for us here at bUTTONpUSHER. The Irish post-rock collective were in town to celebrate their latest album, I Leave You This, released via Nice Weather For Airstrikes and A Cheery Wave Collective—two labels that champion the boundary-pushing ethos the band embodies.
To celebrrate the release the band performed and filmed the track “Hibakusha” from the album ahead of the show. The track, named in honour of the survivors of the nuclear bombings in Japan, is a masterclass in evocative storytelling through sound. Its intricate layers build from delicate melancholy to towering crescendos, a sonic mirror to humanity’s capacity for resilience and renewal. The piece reaches its emotional apex with a haunting spoken word segment in Japanese, offering a message of hope that feels as expansive as the music itself.
The performance was captured with a painterly eye by director Jason Boland and polished under the deft production of David Morys Prendergast and Luke Daly.
Overhead, The Albatross prove once again that they don’t just perform music—they create worlds. With I Leave You This, they’ve crafted a record as haunting as it is uplifting, and their live rendition at JT Soar was a moment of pure transcendence. If you haven’t yet experienced the soundscapes of Overhead, The Albatross, now is the time to dive in.
