And So I Watch You From Afar’s seventh studio album, Megafauna, serves as a love letter to the two places they call home: the rugged beauty of Portrush on the Irish North Coast and the bustling streets of Belfast. This record sees the band exploring a more somber, contemplative side while maintaining the explosive energy and intricate instrumentation that have defined their sound. Embracing their ethos of “Do the scary thing” ASIWYFA dives deep into their musical roots and current inspirations.
Recorded over a week with just two guitars, bass, and drums, Megafauna kicks off with “North Coast Megafauna” a track that reintroduces the band’s signature blend of powerful yet playful post-rock. The interplay between Friers and Kennedy’s guitars creates a dynamic journey that effortlessly transitions into the jazz-tinged first single, “Do Mór” while “Gallery of Honour” builds slowly with Chris Wee’s drums before erupting into a punk-infused frenzy and then settling into a more introspective atmosphere, complete with lush strings and ambient noise.
“Mother Belfast (Part 1)” is a tender tribute to the city that nurtured the band nearly two decades ago. This track showcases a mature evolution with jazzy elements, intricate guitar exchanges, and a climactic ending reminiscent of their early discordant style on the Letters EP. “Mother Belfast (Part 2)” shifts to a brighter, more upbeat tone, while “Years Ago” pays homage to their early hip-hop influences from their days in Team Fresh. “Any Joy” is a cinematic, contemplative piece featuring orchestral strings, highlighting the band’s experience in composing film scores. In contrast, “Button Days” bursts with frenetic energy from the start, eventually leading to “Me and Dunbar” a heartfelt tribute to their late friend. This closing track starts somberly and builds to a triumphant celebration, embodying a deeply personal and introspective side of ASIWYFA.
Emerging in the post-pandemic era, Megafauna stands as a bold and unapologetic statement from ASIWYFA. It’s a rallying cry for unity and a vibrant celebration of the communities that inspire them.
