In late 2024, UK heavy duo Kulk brought their raw, hypnotic sound to an extraordinary setting: the Earth House near Cranborne, Dorset. Nestled within the Ancient Technology Centre, the Earth House is a reconstructed Iron Age communal living space, designed to evoke the spirit of ancient henge monuments. With its mud walls and primordial atmosphere, the space served as the perfect backdrop for Kulk’s intense, visceral music, captured in collaboration with Earth House Sessions.
Performing in the Earth House, Kulk found themselves immersed in an environment that felt as timeless as their sound. “Even with mics, cameras, drums, and amps, it still felt like we had traveled back in time” the band shared. “Every note and every snare was sublime. Each minute we were there, you couldn’t help but consider the thousands of years that led to this point—insignificant and powerful simultaneously.”
For director Ali White, who helmed the session, the pairing of Kulk and the Earth House was both intentional and serendipitous. “I knew we needed a band whose sound personified the Neolithic magic of the Earth House, and Kulk were an obvious choice” White explained. “Their hypnotic and brooding grooves are harnessed from elsewhere, and we saw it unleashed in real time. What happened in that space was a transcendent experience. All we had to do was capture it. The mud walls vibrating with their sound is something I won’t forget anytime soon.”
Jade and Thom, have long been known for creating heavy music that is both brutal and deeply human. Their work is an exploration of suffering and resilience, channeled through a relationship that informs their every note. “Kulk is simultaneously an exploration of human suffering and an extension of our own relationship,” they explain. “It reflects exactly what we feel heavy music should be—aggressive and brutal yet ultimately made out of love for those around us.”
