Bristol-based instrumental duo, Socks and Ballerinas, are thrilled to announce their forthcoming self released album, A Bit Jumpy, which is set for release on 27th September 2024. Known for their innovative live looping performances, the duo is comprised of Leonardo Calamati (guitar, bass, and synths) and Katalin Helfenbein (drums). This new release marks a significant milestone in their musical journey, following their return to the UK from Helsinki, Finland.
Recorded and produced by the duo, A Bit Jumpy was meticulously mixed and mastered by Nick Lewis at Old Cottage Audio, an old stone miner’s cottage on the outskirts of Bristol. The album showcases the pair’s evolving sound, blending intricate electronic textures with live instrumentation to create a truly unique auditory experience.
The album opens with “Vanta Black” a track teeming with electronic elements and unexpected nuances that draw listeners into Socks and Ballerinas’ vibrant world. Reminiscent of Aiming for Enrike but infused with a distinct electronica influence, the song sets a compelling tone, encouraging listeners to engage with its danceable beats and complex layering.
Following up is the single “Outsidein” a track that exemplifies the duo’s mastery of loop-based music. It features distorted melodies and electronic loops, crafting an exhilarating soundscape that evokes comparisons to BATTLES. The song captures the unpredictable and dynamic essence of Socks and Ballerinas’ music, it’s like a wild roller coaster ride with its swift changes and unexpected turns, you never know whats coming next!
“Muscle Monsters” shifts the vibe with a groove-centric approach, utilizing bass-driven riffs and innovative looping techniques. The song includes what is assume is a playful nod to Ghostbusters, it’s interwoven with jazzy improvisations that showcase the duo’s versatility and creativity.
“Milk43” offers a moment of introspection with its finger-tapping guitar and ambient noise, gradually building into an atmospheric crescendo. This track serves as a prelude to previous single “Newton” a more aggressive, drum and bass-influenced piece with echoes of Radiohead’s experimental phase, albeit through a math rock lens. Clocking in at just over two minutes, “Newton” is a brief but exhilarating journey that grabs hold of the listener’s attention.

“Leak” introduces a heavier synth presence, blending glitchy guitar work with playful electronic riffs. The track’s lighthearted tone reflects the band’s ability to fuse seriousness with a sense of fun, highlighting their diverse musical influences. “Chemical” continues this trend and is filled with video game-inspired sounds and an array of quirky effects.
As the album approaches its conclusion, “200ml” stands out with its pronounced electronic beats, driven by Helfenbein’s consistent drumming. The final track, “The End of Fiona” closes the album on a contemplative note. It features a mix of squelchy bass lines, acoustic guitars, and subtle percussion, creating a sprawling, expansive soundscape that leaves a lasting impression.
A Bit Jumpy promises to push the boundaries of the electronic sounds that Socks and Ballerinas blend with their distinctive analogue style. The album is poised to be a landmark release for the duo, offering listeners a captivating exploration of genre-defying music that is both innovative and deeply engaging.
