Massachusetts-based SOM are back with their third full-length album, Let the Light In, arriving 14th March 2025 via Berlin’s experimental label Pelagic Records. Coining their unique style “Doom Pop” SOM deliver a lush yet crushing blend of shoegaze, post-metal, and dreamlike melody. If their earlier work reflected the bleakness of external and internal turmoil, Let the Light In is a redemptive journey inward, exploring our primal instincts and the solace found in connection.
The album was forged in adversity. Midway through the writing and recording process, the band’s founding drummer departed unexpectedly. Instead of derailing the project, this setback became a creative catalyst. SOM spent the latter half of 2023 reimagining the record, re-recording large portions and experimenting with new dynamics. The result is a richly textured and emotionally charged album that balances rawness with cinematic sweep.
The first single, “Give Blood” is a towering statement of intent. Opening with an onslaught of distortion and hammering drums, it transitions into an expansive, sky-splitting chorus. Will Benoit’s vocals, simultaneously tender and authoritative, intertwine with duelling guitars that spiral upwards in a crescendo of melody and noise.
Accompanying the single is a visually arresting music video directed by Alex Pace (Blood Incantation, Wayfarer). Set against a backdrop of swirling lights, it depicts a couple in dreamlike vignettes that grow darker and more surreal as the video progresses. Its ambiguity invites interpretation, perfectly mirroring the song’s blend of beauty and tension.
SOM have earned their reputation on the road, touring extensively across North America, Europe, and the UK with bands such as Katatonia, Sólstafir, and Slow Crush. Their relentless live presence has spanned 21 countries, and the challenges of 2023 have only deepened their resolve.
Let the Light In marks a turning point for the band. It’s a testament to resilience and transformation, crafted in the crucible of personal and creative upheaval. Pulsing with catharsis and confidence, the record invites both listeners and creators to navigate the darkness and emerge into the light.
