WHY PATTERNS – SCREAMERS (Review)

Frenzied London noise-grind trio Why Patterns return with their sophomore album Screamers and right off the bat, it’s weird but wonderful. Chaotic drumming, obscure vocals, and heavy, off-kilter bass lines make it clear this is an album you’ll want to strap yourself in for. There’s a whole world of audio carnage to dive into—and it’s only just getting started.

“Clown in a Firehouse” is equally eccentric, packed with maniacal laughter, sliding cartoon sound effects, and warped melodies. Simply put: it’s unhinged. There’s even a cowbell thrown in for good measure.

“Self-Defeating Trebuchet” leans more into a vocal mantra, delivered in a warped, psych-soaked fashion. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where this band fits. They’re unapologetically odd—you’ll either be fully on board or completely baffled.

“Soire Bleu” maintains the same chaotic energy, with relentless drumming that never lets up. Personally, I’m here for it, and I’ll be seeing them live as soon as possible. There are hints of bands like The Jesus Lizard, Mr. Bungle, and Irk—but don’t be mistaken: this is no imitation. It’s very much its own beast, and absolutely worth a listen. The songs tear through at breakneck speed, covering a lot in a lean 16-minute runtime and with tracks like “Clubfoot by Kasabian by Blacklisters” and “Buffoons” standing out as two of the more “accessible” tracks here it’s not long at all before the album wraps up with a looping chant of “around and around.”

As a whole, this is a chaotic, unpredictable, and fiercely creative record that refuses to play by any rules. It’s noisy, bizarre, and occasionally disorienting—but that’s all part of the appeal. For those willing to embrace the madness, be prepared!
