Civil Service release their new single ‘Turn Out The /// Light’

Civil Service release their stunning new single ‘Turn Out The /// Light’, out 31st October via A Cheery Wave and Ripcord Records. The track is taken from their forthcoming album ‘DARK ///’, which is out 21st November.“Turn Out The /// Light is the perfect musical embodiment of this 2-album project and had to be the closer to this chapter. The brutality of Liam Knowles (Hidden Mothers) harsh vocals against pulses of guitar noise gives way to hope as Scott Shepard (Blackshape) sings beautifully over sparse piano, each lyric referencing a song on the record. Finally Light and Dark combine in a maximalist post-rock crescendo.” – Civil Service

“We normally go into the studio knowing exactly what we want to do, but this song has been a white whale for longer than we care to remember. The song is built from parts written by the band 4 years ago, and parts written the week before it had to be recorded. Liam kindly took time out of his evening to come and record his vocals over an early mix of the track and Scott sent us some incredible stems from Utah. Our thanks too to Ramin Bostan (Groan Room) for playing trumpet multiple times for the outro.” – Civil Service

Alex writes: “My intention was to write a line about each song on the album, in order – to mirror the spoken word part on ///Light. Once Thom & I had drafted parts, we threw the 8 lines over to Scott Shepard, who then adapted them to his style and rewrote a couple but very in keeping with the songs.

The only lines that I felt were perfect were the lead up lines to the musical change and thankfully not only did Scott agree, but he delivered flawless performances of them.”
