Hailing from Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Kerretta invite you into their weird imaginations with their new album Angelm, which is set for release on the 18th October 2024 via Dunk Records
Inspired by the concept of a proto-astral collision of Pangea and tectonic plates, Angelm chisels eight tracks into stone, each representing a different continent. The album takes listeners on an intense and chaotic journey, from the soothing shores of a Caribbean beach to the dizzying heights of Sagarmatha’s instrumental intensity.
Album opener Pan Ultima builds slowly with discordant swells, evoking the eerie atmosphere of a distorted carnival tune. Its quirky charm lures you in before exploding into a barrage of musical intensity. This leads seamlessly into Until the Atlas, where thunderous drums and post-rock guitars weave through groovy basslines. The song shifts through proggy stoner rock vibes, keeping you engaged with its unpredictable evolution across its seven-minute runtime, packed with powerful moments.
South AM continues with glitchy guitar and electronic elements over a steady beat. It’s a whirlwind of angular, aggressive sound, delivering sharp, punchy riffs that hit hard. When the heavier sections kick in you fucking know about it, promising to be a live favourite.
Opal Victor lulls you with a false sense of security before unleashing dirty bass synth and pounding its way into a whole new sonic landscape, throwing plenty of curveballs along the way. This unpredictability is Kerretta’s main strength—you’re never sure whats coming next. Fire over Euresia offers jagged rhythms and haunting guitar lines, thriving on the band’s signature weirdness, which pays off across the album. Each song delivers variety without overstaying its welcome, ensuring fans of heavier music across all genres will find something to love.
Eyes in the Bull Temple is another wild ride with offbeat rhythms, driving basslines, and bizarre yet effective samples. The track even closes with a pretty cheesy classic rock ending, adding yet another layer of humour to the album’s eclecticism. Valley Towers builds mystery with swelling guitars and percussive elements before morphing into a doom-laden affair, while closer Oceania features relentless percussion and synths that swell into a colossal wall of chugging bass and guitar. The track is tribal, hypnotic, and crushingly heavy—a fitting end to the album’s journey.
Angelm is an album meant to be experienced in its entirety. Its immersive, unpredictable nature makes it a thrilling and rewarding listen from start to finish.
